Programs and Services

See below to learn more about the programs and services currently available to our Scholars.

Note: Our programs would not be possible without the involvement and leadership of our Scholars themselves. Click here to learn more about how our Scholars are engaged in the development of our programs!

Services

Individualized Advising

Scholarship recipients have access to focused advising and support from the time they start college to when they graduate. While APIASF does not provide tutoring or other types of direct academic support, staff members are available to answer questions, provide guidance, or identify strategies to address challenges Scholars are facing - whether related to academic life, adjustment to college, career exploration, or other concerns.

Programs

Regional Scholar Networks (RSN)

2010 New York City Regional Scholar Network Career Exploration Event

With chapters currently running in Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia, the Regional Scholar Network (RSN) brings together Scholars attending school and alumni residing in a local area for community-building and social/professional networking activities. RSNs are led by a team of Scholars and alumni who serve as Regional Representatives, and who are responsible for organizing social, professional development and service events for the Scholar community throughout the year.

First Year Initiative (FYI)

FYI is a year-long initiative designed to help the newest classes of Scholars navigate their first year of college, understand their scholarship award, and learn more about the various programs and services APIASF offers to support its scholarship recipients. Each month, all first-year Scholars receive an e-newsletter full of tips, advice, and information written by APIASF staff and sophomore Scholars. Topics range from accessing academic support and understanding financial aid to getting involved on campus and helping parents/family adjust to having a student in college. The first year of college can be exciting and yet a little intimidating - FYI aims to make that transition a little bit easier for our Scholars!

Academic Success Program

Currently implemented with a select group of APIASF scholarship recipients, the Academic Success Program assists first-year Scholars in their academic transition to college, with the goal of supporting them in maintaining satisfactory academic progress, utilizing the campus resources available to them, and seeking opportunities to enrich their overall academic experience. Components of the program include ongoing individualized advising, online workshops and reflection activities, semi-annual transcript reviews, and periodic correspondence from APIASF staff.

Academic Advising Network (AAN)

Currently implemented with Scholars in the Seattle area, the Academic Advising Network (AAN) enlists upperclassmen Scholars and alumni as "Peer Advisors" to freshman and sophomore Scholars. Through regular meetings, emails, and phone calls over the course of the year, Peer Advisors provide support and guidance to their advisees in the areas of academic success and the overall transition to college life. Where possible, Scholars are paired with Peer Advisors who attend or have attended the same school, or are in similar programs of study.

APIASF Leadership Blog

What does leadership look like for today's Asian American and Pacific Islander college students? APIASF has created a blog (http://apiascholars.blogspot.com) for current and past scholarship recipients to share their personal experiences with leadership, discuss and learn about leadership-related topics and issues, and explore leadership through the lens of the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience. Written for Scholars by Scholars, the blog is an interactive space for online community-building and learning. In addition to Scholar posts, the blog features video clips targeting specific leadership skills and an online resource center.
