Our Research

As APIASF works to accelerate the success of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students in higher education, strengthen institutional capacity at the colleges and universities they attend, and help mobilize resources to create widespread change, research serves as the foundation to accomplish this mission. In addition to completing its own research reports, APIASF works with some of the nation's leading researchers and national education organizations to provide more accurate data on the community, dispel misperceptions, and better inform education policy and practices to increase equity for AAPI students. The resulting data helps ensure that AAPI students will have the resources to become future leaders who excel in their careers, serve as role models in their communities, and contribute to a vibrant America.

The Condition of College & Career Readiness 2015 Asian American Students

The Condition of College & Career Readiness 2015 is the ACT annual report on the progress of US high school graduates relative to college readiness. This year's report shows that 59% of students in the 2015 US graduating class took the ACT® test, up from 57% last year and 49% in 2011. The increased number of test takers over the past several years enhances the breadth and depth of the data pool, providing a comprehensive picture of the current graduating class in the context of college readiness as well as offering a glimpse at the emerging educational pipeline.

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF), in partnership with the Asian American & Pacific Islander Research Coalition (ARC), released the "Invisible Financial Barriers to College Access for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders" report, which highlights the financial barriers that Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students face transitioning into postsecondary education.

Refugees from Burma/Myanmar and Bhutan in the United States, written by researchers at the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS), exposes the demographic characteristics, challenges and policy implications of the two largest refugee arrivals to the U.S., who are largely invisible in the current national discourse on Asian American socioeconomic outcomes.

The PEER Project

In 2012, APIASF partnered with The National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE) to create the Partnership for Equity in Education through Research (PEER) project. The PEER project works through strategic partnerships with colleges and universities to help ensure that past access and success challenges experienced by the AAPI student population do not continue. Specifically, collaborative work with three of the nation's Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions-De Anza College, City College of San Francisco, and South Seattle Community College-strives to advance America's national college completion goals and the democratic mission of higher education.

2014 PEER Report

The 2014 PEER report, Measuring the Impact of MSI-Funded Programs on Student Success: Findings from the Evaluation on Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), evaluates the effectiveness of minority-serving institution (MSI) grant-funded student programs at AANAPISIs, one of the newest MSI designations. The second publication in the PEER project's series of research on AANAPISIs, this report closely examines AANAPISI-funded programs and their effects on student success at three AANAPISIs, De Anza College, City College of San Francisco and South Seattle Community College.

2013 PEER Report

The 2013 PEER Report: Findings from the First Year of Research on AANAPISIs summarizes the successes and challenges seen in designated and funded Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs). The report is the first in a series from the Partnership for Equity in Education through Research (PEER) project.

CARE

In 2009, APIASF embarked on a new partnership with the National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE) to address the need for disaggregated data to support AAPI students. CARE aims to engage realistic and actionable discussions about the mobility and educational opportunities for AAPIs and how distinctions of race, ethnicity, language and other factors play out in the day-to-day operations of America's education system. Their goal is to provide research on key issues and trends related to access and participation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in higher education.

2010 CARE Report

The 2010 CARE Report: Federal Higher Education Policy Priorities and the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community looks into the need for the United States to increase college degree attainment to stay competitive in the global economy, relating it to the needs of the AAPI community. The focus of the report surrounds three principals: education and workforce development, AAPIs in the community college sector and minority-serving institution legislation.
